Human trafficking is a modern form of slavery where people, mostly women and girls, are involved in labor or sexual exploitation and slavery applying power, threat, enforcement or deception. Human trafficking is an international problem involving almost every country in the world either as the destination or origin country of the sold persons.
Human trafficking as we know it today started with ancient slavery. In time the form human trafficking takes has changed but the essence remains the same as thousands of years ago - people sell people.
The main goal of human trafficking is to exploit a person, mostly to gain financial profit. A person can be exploited for different causes. Currently four forms of human trafficking are recognised:
- prostitution and other forms of sexual exploitation;
- forced labour or services;
- slavery;
- organ trafficking.
