ERF project „I’m Staying In Latvia-II” activities have promoted refugees inclusion into Latvian society

Ievietots: 31.05.2012
Societys’ “Shelter “Safe House”” social worker Anita Ūdre has been working with refugees and persons with alternative status for more than a year.
A.Ūdre: “Refugees in Latvia are faced with many different problems which are closely related with one another. The most important issue for these people is Latvian language skills. Latvian law states that for persons who have received refugee status pecuniary aid can be provided for Latvian studies. Persons with alternative status cannot have such help.”

Many other problems which refugees can’t solve on their own arise from lack of information. They don’t have sufficient information about institutions they should go to, and about how to fill in paperwork. They do not understand the medical, education and employment system of Latvia.

Society “Shelter “Safe House”” is implementing the project “I’m Staying In Latvia-II” which is financed by European Refugee Fund (ERF) to help refugees adjust to life in Latvia. When necessary an interpreter is provided. To teach to solve various everyday problems refugees can have consultations with different specialists.

One of the most difficult tasks for refugees is finding work because they do not speak Latvian and often have no adequate profession or education. They cannot learn a new profession because they do not speak Latvian.
State Employment Agency (NVA) has begun consultations for refugees to help choose the most suitable work for them.

In six months within the project for those who really need it material assistance such as basic rations and most necessary household items like a bed or a refrigerator is provided. When necessary medical expenses are covered including doctor visits, examination and treatment. To help refugees become more independent special Skills Improvement Programs are provided which consist of classes about medical, education, social and other systems of Latvia as well.

A client of society “Shelter “Safe House”” from Afghanistan is happy that there is someone who helps him to begin his life in Latvia. He said that without support they (refugees) would not be able to solve their problems “we wouldn’t know where to go, we wouldn’t know our rights. When the project finishes, I won’t know what to do. The biggest problems will be concerning formalities because my Latvian is not yet good enough.”
